As most of you know, Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 19th. Most of us have celebrated Father’s Day for most if not all of our lives, but where did this holiday come from?

There was actually some hesitation to bring Father’s Day into official holiday status. Mother’s Day was already going strong, but some people thought that Father’s Day didn’t have the same sentimental appeal as Mother’s Day. However, one woman, Sonora Smart Dodd, pushed for the idea of Father’s Day and was successful, at least in the state of Washington. The first Father’s Day in the United States happened on July 19, 1910, in Washington state, but it wasn’t until 1972 that it became an official holiday.

In the 1920s and 1930s we almost got rid of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day altogether because there was a movement to combine them and make them Parents’ Day. Ultimately, it was unsuccessful and the official adoption of Father’s Day was successful, so now we have separate days to celebrate male and female parents!
