I’m sure you can’t imagine sitting inside watching TV on a beautiful day, but what if it was something that only comes around once in a lifetime? Okay, more like once every four years. Even so, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games are not something to be missed.

This historic event is being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, making them the first South American country to host the games. Approximately 10,500 athletes from 206 countries are expected to compete in the 306 events offered. The games are taking place among six different venues:  Copacabana, for beach volleyball; Barra, the Olympic Park; Deodoro, for aquatics, BMX, and equestrian centers; and Maracanã, which features two large stadiums.

Did you know that Maracanã, the site of the Opening and Closing ceremonies for the games, holds the world record for the most fans ever to attend a soccer game? The stadium packed in a whopping number of 173,000 fans during the 1950 World Cup final. Maracanã also hosted the World Cup final again in 2014.

The location is not the only aspect that makes these games historic, but the events themselves are unique this year! Golf will be returning to the Olympics after a 112-year hiatus. The sport was previously played in the 1900 and 1904 games, and it was voted this year to be brought back by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Arguably, the most historical thing to take place will be the team five to ten refugees expected to qualify and compete under the Olympic flag.

There are more than enough reasons to watch the 2016 Olympic Games this summer, so don’t miss any more of these events. Despite the summer games occurring every four years, these year’s games will truly be the event of a lifetime.
